About the Project
On a 400-acre property high above the Nehalem Valley, this custom home was designed to be sustainable from the ground up. Passive design principles guide every decision, from how the home sits on the hilltop to where each window is placed.
Before finalizing the design, we ran a sun analysis of the site to study how sunlight moves across the property through the seasons. That analysis shaped the home’s orientation and window layout to capture natural warmth and daylight, reducing the energy needed to heat and light the home.
Sustainability carries through to the materials, too. The home uses sustainable materials throughout, from the structure to the interior finishes.
We developed several design options for this site, ranging from about 2,800 to 4,000 square feet. Each explores a different way to live on the hilltop while keeping the same passive, sustainable approach. Both design options are shown on this page. The home is now under construction.
